Give someone responsibility

Appoint a person to monitor weather and stop the activity. That person should be able to focus on conditions, rather than also coaching or refereeing. Agree on how the decision reaches everyone.

Choose real shelter and allow travel time

Identify substantial buildings or suitable enclosed vehicles. Dugouts and open rain shelters are not adequate. Plan for spectators as well as players, and include the time needed to reach shelter.

Stop early enough

Monitor official forecasts and changing skies. Take thunder and lightning seriously; do not wait until rain reaches the field. If storms are forecast, consider postponing or moving the activity indoors.

Set a clear restart rule

Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming. Every new thunder resets that wait. Continue to follow official warnings and the venue’s instructions.
