Go to proper shelter
Head into a substantial building. If that is unavailable, use a fully enclosed, hard-topped vehicle with its windows closed. A tent, open-sided shelter or isolated tree does not offer safe protection.
Once you are inside
Keep away from windows, plumbing and electrical equipment connected by a cord. Avoid showers and baths while the storm is nearby. Plan these interruptions before an outdoor event rather than deciding in a rush.
Give the storm time to leave
Stay sheltered for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder. Rain stopping does not mean lightning has stopped. Continue following instructions from the local weather service.
Before heading outdoors
Check the forecast and identify a place you can reach quickly if the weather changes. During a trip, keep access to official alerts. A map is supplementary information; it is not a protective system.
