The body matters more than the tyres
The metal outer shell helps carry a lightning current around the occupants. Rubber tyres do not make someone leaning on the outside safe. A car can still be struck.
Use the right kind of vehicle
A fully enclosed hard-topped vehicle differs from a motorcycle, golf cart or convertible. Keep the windows shut and avoid contact with metal parts and connected electrical equipment.
Protection for people is not protection for the car
Lightning may damage electronics, windows, antennas or tyres. Do not assume a vehicle is roadworthy after a strike simply because its occupants are unhurt.
A car is not a shelter for every hazard
This advice concerns lightning. A tornado, flood or other official warning may require different action. Follow local instructions and never treat lightning protection as a reason to drive into severe weather.
